Animal Welfare - Why give animals a voice?
Animal welfare is at the centre of everything the RSPCA does. Animal rescue, rehabilitation or prevention of cruelty, we are the leading organisation for animal welfare issues in the UK. We work to ensure that all kinds of animals – pets, farm animals, wildlife and animals used in scientific research – enjoy the highest standards of welfare.
Working at a government level, we were instrumental in getting the Animal Welfare Act introduced in England and Wales in 2007. Replacing legislation dating back to 1911, this new animal welfare law has much wider scope. It covers cruelty, outlaws fighting and provides clear guidelines for responsible pet ownership. (You can find out more about the Animal Welfare Act here)
Nationally, we are active in rescuing mistreated animals and protecting wildlife, campaigning on animal welfare issues and raising the standards for farm animals.
At a community level, thousands of volunteers help us to make the UK a better place for animals. Cruelty, mistreatment, ignorance and misfortune all play their part in compromising the welfare of animals. If you would like to play your part in changing things for the better, please do get involved with one of the campaigns below or find out more about volunteering.
